The Kris Kristofferson song "To Beat The Devil" first appeared on his self-titled 1969 debut album, but was written about Johnny Cash and for him to record, which he did for his album Hello, I'm Johnny Cash from the following year. Cash re-recorded a stripped-down version over two decades later while recording for the Rick Rubin "American" albums. All three of those versions are here along with a version by Waylon Jennings from his 1972 album Good Hearted Woman.
The Janis Ian song "Stars" is the title track from her 1974 self-titled album. This mix includes contemporaneous versions by Cher, Mel Torme and Nina Simone performing live at Montreux Jazz Festival.
