"The Soul Of Man" is one of 29 songs recorded in the late 1920s during the brief but influential career of Blind Willie Johnson. This mix features recent covers by Tom Waits and Eric Burdon to accompany the original.

"Lithium" was the third single from Nirvana's 1991 debut album Nevermind. It was a much bigger hit in England than it was in The United States. A previous mix included an acoustic demo. This mix features the original rough full band version and a live version performed in Reading, England as well as the album version.

One other song repeats this week: Hank Williams' "Calling You" was recorded at his very first recording session in 1946. This mix has an undated demo as well as that recording.

11-21-13: But He Knows Not What It Means

"In My Room" was written by Brian Wilson for the 1963 Beach Boys album Surfer Girl. This week's mix features a rare German version sung by The Beach Boys with slightly rewritten lyrics, as well as covers by Grant Lee Buffalo and Langley Schools Project to go with the original.

"In Bloom" was a single off Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind.  This mix features both strings and lullaby versions as well as a recent cover by Sturgill Simpson to go with the original. Simpson's version somewhat inexplicably gets the chorus lyrics wrong.

One other song repeats in the mix: Simon & Garfunkel's "Dangling Conversation", with a cover by Joan Baez as well as the original.

"Un Jeune Homme Bien" is Petula Clark's French version of The Kinks' "A Well Respected Man". Other Kinks-written songs on here also include Peggy Lee's version of "I Go To Sleep" and their rare ballad "And I Will Love You".

"What's A Girl Supposed To Do" was written by famed songwriters Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. It was first recorded by Leslie Gore, but a more suggestive version was later recorded by The Shangri-Las. This mix includes both versions as well as the original song demo by Ellie Greenwich.

"Too Young" is a standard from 1951, with the most famous version by Nat King Cole recorded that year. A previous mix included Marvin Gaye's rare version. This mix includes Cole's hit version as well as a rare Peggy Lee version and a take by an early-teenaged Michael Jackson.

"Loosen Up" by E.T. White & His Great Potential Band is an obscure funk rip off of Archie Bell & The Drells' "Tighten Up".
