04-28-11: Pardon Me Miss, I Couldn't Resist

"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" was written as a doo wop song by country songwriter John D. Loudermilk. This week's mix features versions by Solomon Burke, Pat Kelly and Bettye Swan.

Also featured are three loose versions of the gospel standard "John Saw That Number" by Elder Benjamin H. Broadie, Grant & Ella and Neko Case.

One more song appears more than once: The Mick Jones-sung "Stay Free" by The Clash as well as a cover by Pete Wylie.

04-21-11: If She's Passin' Back This Way, I'm Not That Hard To Find

"You Trip Me Up" is from the 1985 debut album by The Jesus & Mary Chain. This week's mix is bookended with the original and an acoustic demo version, and also includes a cover by The Arrogants.

"Tomorrow Night" was recorded by Lonnie Johnson in 1948. Also here are covers by Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.

"It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was written by Paul Anka and a posthumous hit for Buddy Holly. In addition to Holly's version, I've included a recording by Linda Ronstadt.

"Brilliant Corners" is from the 1957 Thelonious Monk album of the same name, featuring Sonny Rollins on saxophone and Max Roach on drums.

"Receipt" by Lil Wayne samples "Lay Away" by The Isley Brothers.

A few versions of the country traditional "There's More Pretty Girls Than One" were featured on a mix earlier this year: this week I have a version by Woody Guthrie.

04-14-11: We Got Wenches On The Benches

"Sisters Of Mercy" is from Leonard Cohen's debut album from a little over forty years ago. This week's mix also includes two cover versions by Dion and Beth Orton.

Also featured on here is "You Won't See Me" by The Beatles with covers by Bryan Ferry and Dar Williams along with another Beatles cover: "Don't Let Me Down" by Phoebe Snow.

"Klap Ya Handz" by Das EFX sounds a lot like Big Daddy Kane's "Ain't No Half Steppin": they both sample "Blind Alley" by The Emotions.

04-07-11: Just Like Way Back In The Days Of Old

"Into The Mystic" was recorded in the fall of 1969 for Van Morrison's Moondance album. This week's mix features the original along with a live performance by Van in 1974 as well as covers by Johnny Rivers and Esther Phillips.

Previously here I've included the Kinks anthem "I'm Not Like Everybody Else". This week I have an alternate version with a little less harmony and a bit more venom, as well as covers by Peter Perrett of The Only Ones and the obscure 60s band Sacred Mushroom.

"Stay Close To Me" was written and produced by Curtis Mayfield for The Impressions' 1968 album This Is My Country. The cover version here alongside the original is by Mayfield proteges The Five Stairsteps with Cubie.

"Ballade" is a saxophone duet between Charlie Parker and Coleman Hawkins that was recorded for a Parker album in 1950.

The rest: a spare alternate version of "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac, the languid "Hey Love" by Stevie Wonder, the J Dilla production "So Far So Good" with Common and D'Angelo, the mellow "This Feeling Is Rated X-tra" by Carl Carlton, the loping "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" by Outkast, T. Rex's wistful "Girl", the eerie "Shook Ones Part II" by Mobb Deep, Hall & Oates' "She's Gone" performed live at The Troubadour, a later re-recording of "Drop" by The Jesus & Mary Chain, the forlorn "You Caused It All By Telling Lies" by Hank Williams and Bob Dylan's anguished "Sara".
