02-10-11: They'll Hurt You And Desert You And Take Your Soul If You Let Them

"The Prettiest Star" is a track from David Bowie's Aladdin Sane album, but first appeared in a different form as a single Bowie recorded with Marc Bolan on guitar. Both versions bookend this week's mix, which also includes an extended heavy-strumming version of T. Rex's "Cosmic Dancer" performed by their lead singer Bolan on a radio session.

Two other songs are featured this week. "My Love" was an early solo Paul McCartney standard and this week also features covers by Corinne Bailey Rae and Cher. Additionally, the Carole King standard "You've Got A Friend" is featured with covers by Yo La Tengo, Dusty Springfield and Ella Fitzgerald performing live.

The rest: the rare Jam song "No One In The World", "Movin On 'Em (remix)" by the obscure Two Kings In A Cypher, a cover of Amy Winehouse's "You Know That I'm No Good" by septugenarian rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson, the rhythmic "Buggin' Out" by A Tribe Called Quest, a Jamie xx remix of Gil Scott-Heron's "NY Is Killing Me", the Dr. Dre-produced "In Da Club" by 50 Cent, the soul singer homage "How Can I Get Next To You?" by George Jackson, the jazz standard "Stairrway To The Stars" by Dexter Gordon" and the wistful "Little Pad" by The Beach Boys.
