02-16-12: 'Cause If You Do It And You're Still Unhappy Then You Know That The Problem Is You

"Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" was originally recorded by Roy Acuff in 1945. Thirty years later it became Willie Nelson's first recorded hit on his album Red Headed Stranger.  This week's mix features his iconic take as well as versions by Hank Williams and Chet Atkins with The Carter Sisters.

"Giving Up" was written by Van McCoy for Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1964. Several years later they re-recorded it as Motown artists. This week features the original pre-Motown version as well as covers by Donny Hathaway and The Ad Libs.

One other song that repeats this week is the jazz standard "Trav'lin Light", which was written for and recorded by Billie Holiday in 1942. The other version here appears on her 1956 album Lady Sings The Blues.

The rest: the wry "Divorce Song" by Liz Phair, the saxophone-accented "She Is Mine" by The Psychedelic Furs, the bluesy "The Bible's Right" by Sister O.M. Terrell, the spooky "People Are Strange" by The Doors, the atmospheric "Shadow Sculptures" by Joe McPhee and John Snyder, the cautionary "Tonz 'o Gunz" by Gang Starr, the original 12" dance version of "Say It Isn't So" by Hall & Oates, the melodic "If You Knew Him Like I Do" by Barbara Mason, the aptly titled "Merciless" by I.M.P., the Dr. Dre-sampling remix of Erykah Badu's "Bag Lady", KIller Mike's purposeful "Untitled",  the wistful "Seems Like" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, the gentle "Sets The Blaze" by Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions and the jazzy "Midnight Lullaby" by Tom Waits.
