This week's mix is bookended by two songs by The Velvet Underground: "Heroin" from their debut album and "Rock & Roll" from their album Loaded, the last studio album with the writer of both songs, Lou Reed. Also on here is a rare live version of his "Candy Says" with Lou Reed on lead vocal. The studio version was sung by fellow band mate Doug Yule.
"I Shall Sing" was a top 40 hit from Art Garfunkel's 1973 debut solo album Angel Clare. It was originally written and recorded by Van Morrison during his 1969 sessions for the Moondance album, but never released until the recent reissue of that album. There are many reggae covers of this song, a previous mix featured a version by Jean & The Gaytones. This week includes Judy Mowatt's cover to accompnay the Garfunkel and Morrison versions.
"It Hurts Me Too" is a blues standard first recorded in 1940 by Tampa Red. In addition to the original, this week includes covers by Karen Dalton and Bob Dylan.
One other song repeats this week: the original demo version of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend" and a cover by Labelle.
