John Lennon once said that "Run For Your Life", from the 1965 Beatles album Rubber Soul, was the one song he regretted writing, for the violence the lyrics promised for the woman the song addresses. This week's mix features a gender-reversed cover by Nancy Sinatra, as well as Johnny Rivers' live version to accompany the original.
"Fever" was originally recorded by Little Willie John in 1956, nearly becoming a mainstream top 20 hit. But it was Peggy Lee's version a couple years later that became the most famous rendition. This mix features both, along with Elvis Presley's 1960 version.
"Your Good Thing (Is About To End)" was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and first recorded by Little Willie John's sister Mabel in 1966. This mix features her version as well as one by Lou Rawls from 1969.
The latter part of the mix picks up from the Rivers track with several live songs: The Go-Go's with a live version of "We Got The Beat", The Psychedelic Furs with a live version of "Heaven", Pete Townshend with a live acoustic version of his single "Let My Love Open The Door", Jane's Addiction's live version of their cover of The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil", Blondie with a live version of Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" and Nirvana with a live version of "Sappy".
The rest: the western-tinged "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" by A Tribe Called Quest, Freddie Hubbard's cover of Paul & Linda McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", the seductive "It Sounds Like My Baby" by Bessie Banks, the Latino hip hop track "Let;s Jam" by D.J. M.A.T.E., the oft-sampled instrumental "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Limited, the goofy "The Force Is Buggin'", the melodic "My Mama Told Me" by Justin Hinds & The Dominos and a demo version of "And I Love Her" by The Beatles.
