"Mood Indigo", composed in 1930, is one of Duke Ellington's most famous standards. A previous mix featured a version by Louis Armstrong with Ellington in 1961. This mix features versions by Nina Simone in 1958, Jackie Wilson in 1961 and The Boswell Sisters in 1933.
"Time After Time" is a Cyndi Lauper song from her 1983 debut album She's So Unusual. This mix features covers by Willie Nelson and Miles Davis to accompany the original.
One other song repeats this week: The Smiths song "Unhappy Birthday" from their final album Strangeways Here We Come released in 1987, as well as a recent cover by Janice Whaley.
Bang Bang Machine's "Geek Love" takes its title from the Katherine Dunn novel of the same era and samples clips from the cult 1930s movie "Freaks".
The rest: the nostalgic "100 Years Ago" by The Rolling Stones, Georgia White's defiant "Was I Drunk?", Lil Wayne's lascivious "I Like The View", Lou Rawls' romantic "Let Me Be Good To You", Don Brown's soulful "Shut The Door", Betty Davis' funky "Stars Starve, You Know", the snotty "Let's Get Rid Of New York" by The Randoms, the swaggering "Why I Love You" by Jay-Z and Kanye West with Mr. Hudson, the posse cut "Frisco" by I.M.P. and an early version of Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy".
