07-17-14: How Can I Make This Dream Come True For Me?

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was written and recorded by The Band for their eponymous debut album released in late 1969. It is written from the perspective of a poor white southerner at the end of the American Civil War.  Previous mixes have included the original, Joan Baez's hit version and a cover by Solomon Burke. This mix includes various 1970s versions by Johnny Cash, Steve Young, Vikki Carr and Richie Havens performing live.

"For The Good Times" was written by Kris Kristofferson in 1968, and first recorded and released by Bill Nash that same year. Most of the public first heard it as a hit for Ray Price in 1970. Kristofferson released his own version that same year on his eponymous debut album. A previous mix included Al Green's cover. This mix features versions by Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra performing with opera soprano Eileen Farrell.

One other song repeats this week: Jr. Walker & The All-Stars' hit "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)", featured on a previous mix and here with two covers by Tony Joe White and The 5th Dimension. Also here by Walker, his single "Walk In the Night" and a cover of his "Got To Hold On To This Feeling" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, the original appearing here previously.

The rest: Sarah Vaughan's cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Make Me Want To Holler)", the punishing "When Gods Go Mad" by rap supergroup Czarface with GZA, a cover of rock supergroup Derek & The Dominoes' "Bell Bottom Blues" by Cher, Funkadelic's smooth "Sexy Ways", the Isaac Hayes-sampling "How Many MC's" by Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rudd, Pharoahe Monch's apocalyptic "WWIII", the haunting "Legend Of A Mind" by The Moody Blues, the spooky "Ghost Town" by Eddie Miller And His Band and a newly re-recorded abridged version of Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy" by Stevie Nicks.
