"Into The Mystic" was recorded in the fall of 1969 for Van Morrison's Moondance album. This week's mix features the original along with a live performance by Van in 1974 as well as covers by Johnny Rivers and Esther Phillips.
Previously here I've included the Kinks anthem "I'm Not Like Everybody Else". This week I have an alternate version with a little less harmony and a bit more venom, as well as covers by Peter Perrett of The Only Ones and the obscure 60s band Sacred Mushroom.
"Stay Close To Me" was written and produced by Curtis Mayfield for The Impressions' 1968 album This Is My Country. The cover version here alongside the original is by Mayfield proteges The Five Stairsteps with Cubie.
"Ballade" is a saxophone duet between Charlie Parker and Coleman Hawkins that was recorded for a Parker album in 1950.
The rest: a spare alternate version of "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac, the languid "Hey Love" by Stevie Wonder, the J Dilla production "So Far So Good" with Common and D'Angelo, the mellow "This Feeling Is Rated X-tra" by Carl Carlton, the loping "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" by Outkast, T. Rex's wistful "Girl", the eerie "Shook Ones Part II" by Mobb Deep, Hall & Oates' "She's Gone" performed live at The Troubadour, a later re-recording of "Drop" by The Jesus & Mary Chain, the forlorn "You Caused It All By Telling Lies" by Hank Williams and Bob Dylan's anguished "Sara".
