01-19-12: I Go There Whenever I Feel The Need To Make Life Have A New Face

"Psycho" was written by blind songwriter Leon Payne in 1966, inspired by the then-recent sniper killings by Charles Whitman at The University Of Texas. It was originally recorded by Eddie Noack, but the 1973 Jack Kittel version is probably the best known.  This week's mix has both those versions as well as a live version by Elvis Costello.

Also appearing on here twice is the early Ray Charles single ""Tell All The World About You" with covers by Bobby Darin and Peggy Lee.

One other song repeats across the mix: the jazz standard "Sweet And Lovely", with a solo version by Thelonious Monk to accompany a live version he recorded with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall.

Snoop Dogg's "Think About It" samples Jerry Butler's "I Need You" and MF Doom's "Rhymes Like Dimes" featuring DJ Cucumber Slice samples Quincy Jones' "One Hundred Ways (Find 100 Ways)" featuring James Ingram.  All four of these appear on this week's mix.

Randy Newman's "Change Your Way" was recorded for the 1981 film Ragtime, but did not appear in the actual movie.

The rest: the chipper "We Got The Beat" by The Go-Go's, Frank Black's layered "Places Named After Numbers", the proto-rap anthem "the Adventures Of Super Rhymes" by Jimmy Spicer, the Latin-tinged "TRaveling Sonmg" by Quantic featuring Alice Russell with The Combo Barbaro, the Curtis Mayfield-produced "World Of Fantasy" by The Five Stairsteps, a cover of Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town" by The Cramps, a re-recording of his old Commodores hit "Easy" by Lionel Richie with Willie Nelson and a demo version of "It's Too Late" by Carole King.
