"Shortnin' Bread" was written by the popular American poet James Whitcomb Riley in 1900. It became a standard for schoolchildren over the 20th century. The version by Bobbie Leecan's Need More Band was recorded in 1927 at a time when the first handful of versions were recorded. Nelson Eddy recorded a version as Willie The Operatic Whale for the 1946 animated Disney feature Make Mine Music. The early rock version by Paul Chaplain & His Emeralds was a hit in 1960.
One other song repeats this week: R.E.M.'s biggest hit "Losing My Religion", the album version and an acoustic version.
The rest: the original mono single version of "All Day And All Of The Night" by The Kinks, the lush "First Impressions" by The Stylistics, the overstuffed "Sixteen" by Rick Ross with Andre 3000, the mellow "Stay" by Chaka Khan and Rufus, The Silver Seas' chipper "The Country Life", Head East's synthesizer accented "Never Been Any Reason", Heatwave's bouncy "The Groove Line", the jazzy "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks" by Artifacts, Darrel Banks' horn driven hit "Open The Door To Your Heart", the Madlib production "Blow The Horns On 'Em" by Guilty Simpson, a cover of George Harrison's "If Not For You" by Sarah Vaughan, Harrison's meditative "Be Here Now", the haunting "Revenge" by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse featuring The Flaming Lips, a cover of The Carpenters hit "(They Long To Be) Close To You" by Diana Ross, the atmospheric "What's A Girl To Do?" by Bat For Lashes and Marilyn Monroe performing a song written for the musical Gentelemen Prefer Blondes called "Bye Bye Baby".
