03-24-16: When I'm Picking Tomatoes, That's When I Ketchup With You

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is a Bob Dylan song written for the soundtrack to the 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. Previous mixes have included covers by Antony & The Johnsons and Jerry Garcia as well as Dylan's original version and live versions he performed with The Band and The Rolling Thunder Revue as well as a bootleg backstage rehearsal. This mix includes covers by Low, Warren Zevon, Television from their live 1982 album Blow Up, Cat Power on a rare unreleased Peel radio session and Jerry Garcia with a more acoustic version accompanied by David Grisman and Tony Rice.

Two other songs repeat across the mix: "Asking For It" from Hole's 1994 album Live Through This as well as a live version and "Bitch" from The Rolling Stones 1971 album Sticky Fingers here with an acoustic cover from 1989 by Great White.

The rock photographer Lynn Goldmsith released one album in 1983 under then name "Will Powers" with the lead single "Adventures In Success" co-written by Robert Palmer and Sting, here with a Joey Negro edit of the extended version.

"Easy As Pi" is a version of Madvillain's "Great Day" with the music of Sade replacing Madlib's production as part of the MF DOOM/Sade album Sadevillain Pt. 2 by Sean H.

03-17-16: Sometimes Late When Things Are Real And People Share The Gift Of Gab Between Themselves

"I Saw The Light" is the first track of Todd Rundgren's 1972 double album Something/Anything? and was a top 20 single. It has appeared on a previous mix but this mix features covers by Stan Barber, Teenage Fanclub and Yo La Tengo.

One other song repeats on the mix: the early Kinks demo "Tell Me Now So I Know", here with a cover by Holly Golightly.

"I Used To Work In Chicago" is a drinking song written in the mid 1940s and often performed with alternate bawdy lyrics that vary widely. The version here is by Sammy Kaye and his chorus.

03-10-16: Everybody Wanted Last Year's Future

"A Day In The Life" is the final song on The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Previous mixes have included all vocal and demo versions as well as the original album version along with covers by Chocolate Snow, Grant Green, Bobbi Boyle & The Trio and Neil Young performing live. This mix includes covers by Barry Gibb and The Bee Gees for the soundtrack to a 1978 film sharing the same name as the Beatles album, a recent version by Robyn Hitchcock and a version by Jose Feliciano recorded live on April 21, 1969 in London.

"I Love You, Suzanne" is a single from Lou Reed's 1984 album New Sensations. This mix also includes a recent cover by the Afghan Whigs.

"Jack U Off" is the final song from Prince's 1981 album Controversy. Also on the mix is a 2005 cover by Robyn.

02-25-16: With Your Hair Piled Up High I Will Never Forget

"Marie" is a song from Randy Newman's 1974 album Good Old Boys. Previous mixes have include the original album version, a demo version and covers by The Morning Benders and Jose Feliciano. This mix features covers by Joe Cocker and Glen Campbell as well as a latter day solo version by Randy Newman.

Johnny Rivers' hit version of the Harold Dorman song "Mountain Of Love" is said to be the inspiration for The Replacements' "Waitress In The Sky", which is also here in the new unearthed Ed Stasium mix. The former song is here as well with a 1975 live cover by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

One other song repeats across the mix: The 1975 space jazz song "Beautiful Woman" by Lonnie Liston Smith with a remix by DJ Daisuke Kuroda. 

The Pete Rock remix of Jeru The Dmaja's "You Can't Stop The Prophet" samples the live European version of The Modern Jazz Quartet's"Django", both featured here.

02-18-16: And Everybody There Is Wise And Everyone Has Taste

Ron Wood's 1975 album Now Look was recorded while he was still a member of Faces, but also recording and touring with The Rolling Stones. By the end of the year, his former band broke up and he officially joined the latter. "Breathe On Me" features Keith Richards on harmony vocals. This mix features that version as well as a version Wood recorded for his 1992 album Slide On This.

A few other songs repeat this week: demo and album versions of PJ Harvey's "Long Snake Moan" from her 1995 album To Bring You My Love, Slim Harpo's 1966 single "I'm Your Breadmaker, Baby" with a 2001 version by his one-time band mate Lazy Lester and the extended version of James Brown's "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing (Open The Door, I'll Get It Myself)" here with a cover by Grant Green who appends Brown's "Cold Sweat" in a medley. The Brown song is sampled by Chubb Rock and Howie Tee's "Stop That Train", which also samples Brown's "Night Train", also here.

"O-o-h Child" is a top 10 single from 1970 by the family group The Five Stairsteps, Chicago's answer to The Jackson 5. Previous mixes have featured versions by Laura Nyro & Labelle, Richie Havens and Nina Simone as well as the original. This mix features covers by Roberta Flack, Beth Orton, Valerie Carter, Dee Dee Sharp Gamble and a remix of Nina Simone's version. Additionally, The Five Stairsteps are here with "Danger! She's A Stranger".

One other song repeats across the mix: two covers of Blondie's 1979 hit "Dreaming", by Yo La Tengo and Katy Goodman with Greta Morgan.

02-04-16: I Know You Hate That Mystic Shit

"Where Are We Going?" is a Marvin Gaye song produced by The Mizell Brothers in 1972 for a an album that was to follow "What's Goin' On". The album and song were shelved, in part because the Mizell Brothers were not part of Motown. They took the song to jazz musician Donald Byrd, who recorded it as well. A previous mix had Marvin's alternate version: this mix has alternate version #2, Byrd's version and a live radio show version by Josh Rouse.

A couple other song repeat across the mix. "Sword Of Damocles (Externally)" is from Lou Reed's 1992 album Magic and Loss, here with a cover from Joseph Arthur's tribute album Lou from 2014; as well as Neil Young's "Little Wing", originally recorded for his shelved 1977 album Homegrown but released a few years later for his 1980 album Hawks & Doves,  also here with a recent cover by Elizabeth Mitchell.

Q-Tip's "Higher" samples Roy Haynes' "Wonderin'", the "2 tha 3" mix of The Pharcyde's "Soul Flower" samples "The Memory" by Roy Ayers Ubiquity and Organized Konfusion's "Stress" samples "Mingus Fingus No. 2" by Charles Mingus.

01-28-16: We Play The Game To Pass The Time

English-born songwriter Pam Sawyer encouraged "Tainted Love" singer Gloria Jones with her songwriting and they became a songwriting duo for Motown. One of their songs, originally recorded by Thelma Houston for her 1973 eponymous album, was "I Ain't That Easy To Lose". Bettye Swan recorded a version a couple years later with the grammar corrected. This mix includes versions by Jr. Walker & The All-Stars and Sister Love as well as those two.

Two other songs repeat on the mix: Morrissey's "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" from his 1992 album Your Arsenal along with David Bowie's cover from a year later and The Shangri-La's 1964 hit "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" along with a live cover by The Go-Go's seventeen years later.

"Millionaire" by Dudley Moore appears on the soundtrack for the 1967 British film Bedazzled. The Tom Middleton mix here appends the main theme of "The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe" by The Robert Mellin Orchestra and "Clangers" by The Clangers from the late 60s British animated sci fi show.

01-21-16: Having Nothing Gave Me Everything I Need

"Try Again" is a song by Chris Bell for his band Big Star's 1972 debut album #1 Record.  This mix includes an earlier version by an earlier incarnation of the band called "Rock City" as well as a live version by the band's usual lead singer Alex Chilton as well as the album version.

"I'm New Here" is a song by Smog from their 2005 album A River Ain't Much To Lose. Previous mixes included a cover by Gil Scott-Heron from his eponymous 2010 comeback album as well as a remix of that title track by Jamie xx. This mix includes a cover by Lucky Peterson a as well as a remix of Gil Scott-Heron's version by Makaya McCraven as well as Smog's original version.

Two other songs repeat across the mix. Public Enemy's "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos", from their 1988 album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back is on here with a rough monitor mix of Tricky's cover called "Black Steel", with Martina Topley-Bird on vocals, from a new reissue of his 1995 album Maxinquaye. Their original version appeared on a previous mix. "Plastic" is by a band called Oneness of JuJu that was originally called Juju & The Space Rangers. This ix includes their 1978 single as well as the original 45 version from a few years earlier.

The rest: The Roy Ayers'-produced 1982 single "Don't You Know" by flutist and singer Bobbi Humphrey, the 12 inch version of New Order's "Ceremony", The Cure's late 80s non-album rarity "To The Sky", Waylon Jennings' cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman" from his 1978 album with Willie Nelson, Ice Cube's aptly-titled sample-heavy "Jackin' For Beats", Michell Wiley's seductove 1977 single "I Feel So At Home Here", Ka's stoic "Having Nothin'" and Yoko Ono's song "Let Me Count The Ways" from her 1984 album Milk & Honey, credited to her and John Lennon a few years after his death.
