"Get Out Of My Life, Woman" was written by Allen Toussaint and originally a hit for Lee Dorsey. This week's mix features that recording as well as versions by Solomon Burke and Big Joe Williams with Thad Jones and The Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Previously on here I've included a rare cover of Curtis Mayfield's "I've Been Trying" by The Reggie Sadler Revue. This week I have Curtis' original version with The Impressions as well as covers by fellow Impression Jerry Butler as well as The Heptones.
"Blood Count" was the final composition written by Duke Ellington's collaborator Billy Strayhorn while he was dying of cancer in a hospital bed. This week includes two versions: Duke's studio recording in 1967 shortly after Strayhorn's death as well as a rare live collaboration between Stan Getz and Chet Baker.
Also on here twice is The Replacements' "Sixteen Blue": a cover by Florapop as well as a studio outtake from The Replacements' Let It Be sessions.
"Great Big Kiss" by Johnny Thunders is a cover of another song on here: "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" by The Shangri-Las.
The rest: a cover of Elton John's "Border Song" by Joes Feliciano, the funky "It's Gettin' Hectic" by Brand New Heavies with Gang Starr's Guru, the playful "Booted" by Roscoe Gordon, the exuberant "Take Your Whiskey Home" by Van Halen, Run-D.M.C.'s genre-mashing "Rock Box", the ruminative "Examination Of What" by Digable Planets, the giddy "Sweet And Dandy" by The Maytals, a cover of Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" by Nina Simone, Francois Hardy's elegant "La Maison Ou J'Ai Grandi", a non-album demo from Blondie's debut recording sessions called "Platinum Blonde" and the spare "Always Marry Your Lover" by Dick Reinhart.
