Randy Newman's "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" first appeared on his 1972 album Sail Away but had already been covered by Harry Nilsson on his 1970 album Nilsson Sings Newman. In addition to both these versions, this week's mix features a cover by Melissa McClelland.
"I Had To Tell You" is a song by the Texan band 13th Floor Elevators from their 1967 album Easter Everywhere. This week features covers by Volbeats and Poi Dog Pondering as well as the original.
One other song repeats this week: the proto goth track "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus with a cover by Nouvelle Vague.
The rest: the guitar-driven "Save The Children" by Nice & Smooth, the paranoid "Jeopardy" by Greg Kihn Band, the 12 inch version of the spacey "Words" by Lee 'Scratch' Perry & The Upsetters, Pete Rock's Curtis Mayfield-sampling "Give It To Y'all" with Rock Maricano and Trife, the bittersweet "Remember The Rain" by 21st Century, Large Professor's languid "One Plus" One" with Nas, Chocolate Snow's smitten "It's Like Heaven", the disaster-themed "Ryecove Cyclone" by Martin & Roberts, Galaxie 500's melodic "Strange", the wistful "Now That The Desert Is Blooming" by Jackie DeShannon, Elvis Costello's empathetic "Alison", a cover of Costello's "Almost Blue" by Jimmy Scott and take one of the elegant Duke Ellington composition "Lotus Blossom".
