"Take Me To The River" is a song first recorded in 1974 by Al Green, who co-wrote it with his guitarist Mabon "Teenie" Hodges. The following year fellow Hi Records label mate Syl Johnson recorded it with many of the same musicians, but also harmonica. In 1978, both Bryan Ferry and Talking Heads released versions. This mix features all four of these.
"A Little Respect" is a single from September 1988 by the British band Erasure. This week features versions by Elizabeth Angelucci, Kate Walsh and Lee Ann Westover as well as the original.
One other song repeats on the mix: The Clash's "Up In Heaven (Not Only Here)" from their 1981 album Sandinista!, with a cover by The Smithereens.
When originally recorded, Doug E. Fresh & Ricky D's "La Di Da Di" contained a passage of sung lyrics in the rap that quoted from A Taste Of Honey's "Sukiyaki". Due to clearance issues these were omitted on CD versions. The truncated version has appeared previously on this blog, but this week has the full version sung by the future Slick Rick as well as the A Taste Of Honey song.
Nice & Smooth's "No Delayin"" features a sample of Slick Rick's Doug E. Fresh collaboration "The Show" as well as Prince's "Starfish & Coffee".
