"Pray Children If You Want To Go To Heaven" is one of only six songs recorded by the mysterious Nugrape Twins in the 1920s. One of their songs "I Got Your Ice Cold Nugrape" was included on a previous mix years ago and is one of two early jingles for a nascent but still extant southern soda company. Their other songs, like this one, are pure gospel.
Two song repeat this week: My Bloody Valentine's anguished "No More Sorry", with a cover by Pas de Printemps pour Marnie and Yo La Tengo's Pauline Kael-reefrencing "Deeper Into Movies", with a new acoustic version to accompany 1997's wall of noise album version.
The "Apple Brightness Mix" of Sinead O'Connor's "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" contains samples of "How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths. On this mix that is followed by a Love Spit Love version of the Smiths' song.
The rest: a cover of Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me" by The Isley Brothers, Jimmy Smith's organ-driven version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", Barry White's lustful "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe", the musical trailer for the racy 70s film "Naughty Stewardesses", Betty Davis' ribald "He Was A Big Freak", King Tee & Ice Cube's fake liquor commercial song "Get Your Girl In The Mood Quicker", the early obscure rock song "Bad Girl" by The Riviaires, Pete Rock with INI in the mid-90s recorded but much later released "Step Up", the exuberant "Blame It On The Boogie" by The Jacksons, the elegant Latin-tinged "The Sleeping Lady And The Giant Who Watched Over Her" by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, a cover of The Statler Brothers' "Flowers On The Wall" and an acoustic demo version of Bob Dylan's Elvis-inspired "Went To See The Gypsy".
