"Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" is the closing song from Marvin Gaye's landmark 1971 album What's Going On and incorporates a little of the title track's chorus. A previous mix featured a live version by Gaye. This mix, #604 in the series, features his album version along with a medley of songs from that album, including Inner City Blues, by The Shirelles; a cover by 70s Belgian jazz-rock band Placebo; and a 1981 cover by Gil Scott-Heron with a rap imbedded within his version.
"Proud Mary" is a single released in January 1969 by Creedence Clearwater Revival from their second album Bayou Country. A previous mix featured a cover by Solomon Burke from the same year. This mix features the full album hit version by Ike & Tina Turner, as well as covers by The Voices Of East Harlem and Billy Paul.
One other song repeats on the mix: two different versions of "Religion" from Public Image Ltd's 1978 debut album First Issue, one with guitars and one all vocal. A previous mix featured a song called "I Say A Little Prayer For Religion" which is a mash up of these vocals against Burt Bacharach's pop standard "I Say A Little Prayer".
The version of "Good Night", written by John Lennon for Ringo Starr to sing, from the self-titled album by The Beatles (or the "White Album") includes the band harmonizing with Ringo's lead vocal and a guitar part by George Harrison.
