03-29-12: A Stain On My Notebook Says Nothing To Me

"To Know Him Is To Love Him" was written by a teenaged Phil Spector for his group The Teddy Bears in 1958.  It was inspired by the words on his father's tombstone.  It became a number one hit and soon launched his production career.  This week's mix features that version with a version by Amy Winehouse and a more gender inclusive version called "To Know You Is To Love You" by Marc Bolan of T. Rex, recorded in 1977 with his companion Gloria Jones shortly before his death in a car accident with Jones.

"Put Yourself In My Place" was first written by The Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. This week's mix features versions by The Supremes, Chris Clark and Delroy Wilson.

One other song repeats: the album and demo version of "Underground" by Curtis Mayfield.

The rest: GZA's eerie "Cold World", Rocky Porter's cautionary "The World Is A Monster", Big Boi's salacious "Tangerine", the reggae-tined "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" by Fela Kuti, Kool Keith's spare "Real Gold", the melodic "Hundreds Of Sparrows" by Sparklehorse, a cover of David Soul's "Don't Give Up On Us" by Billy Paul, the giddy "You're So Fine" by Dorothy Berry, Squeeze's wry "Black Coffee In Bed", the atmospheric "I'm Calling You" by The Montclairs, the spiritual "I'm Just A Voice" by Helen McGiver And The McGiver Singers and Bruner's version of the Hoagy Carmichael standard "Georgia On My Mind".
