03-12-15: There's A Liar On The Altar

"Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" is the closing song from Marvin Gaye's landmark 1971 album What's Going On and incorporates a little of the title track's chorus. A previous mix featured a live version by Gaye. This mix, #604 in the series, features his album version along with a medley of songs from that album, including Inner City Blues, by The Shirelles; a cover by 70s Belgian jazz-rock band Placebo; and a 1981 cover by Gil Scott-Heron with a rap imbedded within his version.

"Proud Mary" is a single released in January 1969 by Creedence Clearwater Revival from their second album Bayou Country. A previous mix featured a cover by Solomon Burke from the same year. This mix features the full album hit version by Ike & Tina Turner, as well as covers by The Voices Of East Harlem and Billy Paul.

One other song repeats on the mix: two different versions of "Religion" from Public Image Ltd's 1978 debut album First Issue, one with guitars and one all vocal. A previous mix featured a song called "I Say A Little Prayer For Religion" which is a mash up of these vocals against Burt Bacharach's pop standard "I Say A Little Prayer".

The version of "Good Night", written by John Lennon for Ringo Starr to sing, from the self-titled album by The Beatles (or the "White Album") includes the band harmonizing with Ringo's lead vocal and a guitar part by George Harrison.

The rest: a live cover of The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" by Odetta; a cover of Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels" by Japanese Breakfast; the 1987 track "My Baby's Got Jet Lag" by I, Ludicrous; the paranoid 1984 single "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell with back-up singing by Michael Jackson; the gory "Too Much Blood" by The Rolling Stones from the previous year; a teenaged Queen Latifah's fierce "Evil That Men Do" with KRS-One from her 1989 debut album All Hail The Queen, Kam's 1992 single "Still Got Love 4 'UM", Jay-Z's "Bring It On" from his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt with Big Jaz & Sauce Money.

This mix, number 603 in this series, features the original and covers by The Jackson 5 from their 1969 debut album, Rod Stewart from 1978 and Barry White from 1973. John Cougar Mellencamp's 1985 single "Lonely Ol' Night" quotes from the song.

02-26-15: Oh Baby To Buy You All The Things You Need For Free

This mix, number #602 in the series, comes exactly six months after the fox joined the monkey in heaven and is dedicated to him. I love him more than all of these songs in the world.

"Free Money" is a song from Patti Smith's 1975 debut album Horses. This mix features a cover from a few years later by British punk band Penetration, a live cover from 2013 by Superchunk with Eleanor Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces as well as the original.

"I Still Miss Someone" is a Johnny Cash song co-written with his nephew Roy in 1958. Previous mixes have included the original and a re-recording by Cash in the 60s. This mix features a bootleg duet between Cash and Bob Dylan in the late 60s, a 90s version with Cash and Willie Nelson playing guitar and a version by Linda Ronstadt from her 1972 self-titled album.

Two other songs repeat on the mix: two covers of The Rolling Stones' 1981 single "Waiting On A Friend" by Over the Rhine and Luna as well as the original 1980 album track "Credit In The Straight World" by Young Marble Giant as well as a cover by Hole from their 1994 album Live Through This.

The rest: the early country tune "Home-Cooking Week" by The Leatherman Sisters, the harrowing "Four Enclosed Walls" by Public Image Ltd., the percussive "Pain" by Pusha T with Future, the rustic "Numbers On The Brain" by New Orleans Willie Jackson, the Faze-O saampling "Please Listen To My Demo" by EPMD, the sweet but unnerving "Make Me Your Slave" by Willie And The Mighty Magnificents, the hopeful "In Dayz 2 Come" by Jungle Brothers, the odd "Wanted For Questioning" by Bob Lee, Acetone's mournful "Shaker", Cher's cover of Jackson Browne's pop standard "These Days", an early version of Jon Lennon's "Oh Yoko!" and Cat Stevens' elegiac "Lillywhite"

02-19-15: We All Want The Stuff That's Found In Our Wildest Dreams

"Midnight, The Stars And You" is a 1934 pop song best known for the Ray Noble and Al Bowlly version recorded that same year and used in the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film The Shining. This mix features that version as well as recent versions by Jim James and Deerhoof.

"I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" is a hit soft rock song from 1976 by England Dan & John Ford Coley. This mix features the original along with contemporary versions by Dee Dee Sharp Gamble and one with altered lyrics by Damion & Denita.

Ride" Ladytron's droll "Her Took Her To A Movie", Harry Nilsson's Italian version of his standard "Without You" called "Per Chi", Bobby Womack's rueful late career swan song "Please Forgive My Heart" and David Bowie's German version of his single "Heroes" called "Helden".

02-12-15: And I'm Floating In A Most Peculiar Way

"Like A Rolling Stone" was a #2 hit single for Bob Dylan in 1965, and at over six minutes twice as long as other hit singles of the time. Previous mixes have included Dylan's original album version, a live version on his later album Self Portrait and covers by Maxine Weldon, Flatt & Scruggs and The Jimi Hendrix Experience performing live at the Monterey International Pop Festival. This mix features covers by Cher, Major Harris and The Undisputed Truth.

"Afraid" is a song by Nico from her third album Desertshore, released in 1970. This mix features contemporary covers by Espers and Neko Case to accompany the original.

One other song repeats here: Sinead O'Connor's "Black Boys On Mopeds" from her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, with a recent live cover by Sharon Van Etten.

The remix of Grand Puba and Sadat X's "I Like It" samples Henry Mancini and HIs Orchestra's "Here's Looking At You Kid" from the 1975 score for The Return Of the Pink Panther, which has been featured previously. "So Smooth" is also from that soundtrack.

The rest: Bob Dylan performing "Mama, You Been On My Mind" with Joan Baez and The Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975, Paris' vicious "The Devil Made Me Do It", eventual Bob Dylan producer Bob Johnston with the eerie "The Whipmaster", the explicit x-rated version of "Do Wah Diddy" by The 2 Live Crew featuring an interpolation of The Manferd Mann Band original, the sprightly "Bubble Gum" by Brigitte Bardot, the sardonic "Supersonic Rocket Ship" by The Kinks, the studio singalong "Lowdown Monkey Blues" by Paul Westerberg and Tom Waits, Carmen McRae's version of the Spiral Starecase pop standard "More Today Than Yesterday", the early Jackie DeShannon b-side "Be Good Baby",  the Allen Touissanat-produced "It's Raining" by Irma Thomas, a cover of The Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" by Cruel Black Dove and the rare early Deram records version of "Space Oddity" by David Bowie.

02-05-15: The Words I Thought I Brought I Left Behind

"Are You Washed In The Blood Of The Lamb?" has existed, under slightly various titles, as a hymnal since Presbyterian minister Elisha Hoffman wrote the lyrics in 1878. This mix features the 1927 recordings by Dacosta Woltz's Southern Broadcasters and Ernest V. Stoneman, a 1930 recording by Welling and McGhee and a 1971 recording by Country Gentlemen.

"So Sad About Us" is a 1966 song by The Who from their second album A Quick One. This mix features an acoustic demo by Pete Townshend that ends abruptly, as well as covers by The Breeders and The Jam (the demo version of their cover) to accompany the original.

One other song repeats: The Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles The Plastic Robots Pt. 1" from 2002 with a cover by Jesse Malin from 2008.

"What's Free" by Meek Mill with Rick Ross and Jay-Z uses The Notorious B.I.G.'s "What's Beef" as its musical bed.

"See Me, Feel Me" is a single from the 1969 album Tommy by The Who, it was originally the second and third part of the three movement album closer "We're Not Gonna Take It".

I Want Ya", William Onyeabor's majestic "Crashes In Love (original mix)", Coco Rosie's spooky "Good Friday", the melancholic "Darkness" by The Police and the ethereal "Carpet Crawlers" by Genesis.

01-29-15: I Could Stay With You Forever And Never Realize The Time

"You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" is a song from Bob Dylan's 1975 album Blood On the Tracks. The official album version as well as covers by Mary Lou Lord, Madeleine Peyroux, and Elvis Costello have all appeared on previous mixes. This mix features three recently unearthed studio versions.

"Blood Count" is a 1967 composition by Duke Ellington's writing partner Billy Strayhorn. Originally called Blue Cloud, it was retitled as Strayhorn completed it in the hospital while dying of cancer. Previous mixes include Ellington's original studio recording and a live recording by Stan Getz and Chet Baker. This mix includes Getz's studio version, Ellington performing it live in Paris in 1967 and Elvis Costello singing a version called "My Flame Burns Blue" with lyrics he added to the original.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a George Harrison composition for his band The Beatles' self-titled 1968 album, known as "The White Album". Previous mixes have included an instrumental cover by Moody, a live performance by George for The Concert For Bangladesh, an interpolation by The Wu-Tang Clan with George's son Dhani among others, the official album version and an officially-released alternate version. This mix adds three recently released alternate studio versions.

One other Harrison composition is featured here. The Harrison-written "Something" appears on the 1969 Beatles album Abbey Road. Previous mixes include the original and demo as well as covers by Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, The Sundowners, Pavement, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Carmen McRae, Junior Walker & The All-Stars, Bobby Womack performing live and George himself performing live. Harrison called James Brown's version his favorite. It is behind "Yesterday" as the second most recorded Beatles song. And they are the only two Beatles songs Frank Sinatra ever recorded, and "Something" is the only one he recorded twice. This mix includes both versions: one that was a 1970 non-album single with arrangement by Lennie Heyton and the other a Nelson Riddle arrangement for Sinatra's 1979 album Trilogy: Past Present Future.

Jay-Z's  1998 soundtrack collaboration "What The Game Made Me" samples Don Blackman's eponymous 1982 album.

The rest: Billy Stewart's 1968 single "Cross My Heart", a vinyl-only rare remix of Nice & Smooth's "Cake & Eat It Too", The Sweet Inspirations' forlorn "Gotta Find (A Brand New Lover) (Pts. 1 & 2)", John Gary Williams' mellow "The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy", the soulful "Good-Bye" by Sheisty Khrist & Devine Carama, the fierce "Refugee" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, a cover of The Replacements' "Bastards Of Young" by Katy Goodman and Greta Morgan and a cover of The Beatles' A Day In The Life" by Bobbi Boyle & The Trio.

01-22-15: And Though You're Gone, You're With Me Every Single Day, Believe Me

This mix is also for the fox who lives in my heart.

"Speak Low" is a standard composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Ogden Nash. It was introduced in the 1943 Broadway musical One Touch Of Venus. The opening line is a reference to Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. This mix features a rare version from the 40s with Weill himself playing piano to Ira Gershwin's voice, as well as versions by Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald with Joe Pass.

"In The Morning" is an early Bee Gees song first recorded in 1966, then re-recorded as "Morning Of My Life" in 1970. This mix includes both versions as well as a live and studio version by Nina Simone.

01-15-15: They Say Everything Can Be Replaced

This marks the 596th mix, the first one without the monkey or the fox, who died a week ago today. As did my heart. This is dedicated to him. I hope he is enjoying it with the monkey somewhere.

Two songs repeat this week. The recently-released alternate version of "Love Street" by The Doors, with a cover by George Winston. And Hall & Oates' 1984 hit "Adult Education", with a cover by Emm Gryner.

Kid N Play's "Last Night" samples Esther Williams' "Last Night Changed It All (I Really Had A Ball)".

The snippets of Prince's "Purple Rain" and his cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You" are from a 1983 solo piano session.

The rest: Art Tatum's late 40s private solo piano version of the Duke Ellington standard "In A Sentimental Mood", the dreamy "Wring French" by Piano Magic, Tammi Lynn's cover of The Doors' "Light My Fire", the playful "Captain Crunch" by Czarface & MF Doom, John Edwards' cover of America's "Tin Man", Lil Wayne's frenzied "Mona Lisa" with Kendrick Lamar, an alternate version of Laura Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues" performed by Bobbie Gentry, a version of John Lennon's "Isolation" by his good friend Harry Nilsson, Lennon's acoustic version of his "My Mummy's Dead", the mournful "Whisper Softly, Mother's Dying" by Kid Smith And Family, an a cappella version of Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" performed by The Band and Max Waldron's haunting "All Alone".

01-08-15: Please Please Please Baby Don't Die

"Stranger In The House" is a song that was left off Elvis Costello's 1977 debut album My Aim Is True. It appeared on a reissue of the album decades later but was covered in 1977 by Rachel Sweet and the following year as a duet between Costello and George Jones. This mix includes those two subsequent versions, his original version recorded with his backing band Clover and a live version with his band The Attractions in 1978.

"Ooo Baby Baby" is a 1965 single written by Smokey Robinson for his group The Miracles. Previous mixes have include the original single along with covers byLaura Nyro, San Francsico T.K.O.'s, Marianne Faithfull & Antony and a "stripped" mix of the original. This mix features covers by Linda Ronstadt, Blinky & Edwin Starr, Honey Cone and Smokey himself performing live wth his childhood friend Aretha Franklin on Soul Train.

The music of Aretha is further featured on this mix with both her demo and original version of her 1967 single "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)", her first for the Atlantic record label as well as a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and a studio demo called "Are You Leaving Me".

One more song repeats this week: Otis Redding's original "Let Me Come On Home", with a cover by Hopeton Lewis & The Merritone All Stars. EPMD's "The Steve Martin" samples the Redding original.
