10-05-06: He Woulda Been Up In Connecticut Twice As Fast

The Legendary K.O.'s blistering post-Katrina track "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People", which leads this mix, quotes the Kanye West soundbite as well as heavily sampling his hit "Gold Digger" which in turn contains an interpolation of Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman".

This mix from a few years ago features the Lou Reed song "Satellite Of Love".  I've included his solo version before, but for this mix I have an early alternate take by Lou's band The Velvet Underground as well as covers by The Eurythmics and Porno For Pyros.

Also repeating this week is Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow", given a funky cover by Labelle.

Near the end of the mix is a nice little live soul set bookended by covers of  The Beatles' "Yesterday" by The Moments and Donny Hathaway.  In between: another Beatles cover with Bobby Womack's version of "Something" and Aretha Franklin's very own "Call Me".

Other stuff: Alton Ellis' reggae cover of Junior Walker & The All Stars' "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)", the sly "The More You Ignore Me" by Morrissey, the shimmering "Everyday I Write The Book" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions, the odd "Sandwiches" by Detroit Grand Pubahs, a remix of "Selfish" by J Dilla's Slum Village with cameos by Kanye West and Jay-Z, Val Bennett's instrumental reggae tune "The Russians Are Coming (Take 5)", early Common track "Penny For Your Thoughts", the languid "Indian Girl" by The Rolling Stones, Quasimoto's blissful "Goodmorning Sunshine", the sweet "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" by The Lovin' Spoonful, Susanna And The Magical Orchestra's subdued cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence" and Louis Armstong's later version of his hit "Wonderful World" complete with a heartfelt spoken word introduction.
