Last year's mix has two versions of The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere": the original and a cover by The Flaming Lips. Other repeating songs include the 70s bubblegum pop hit "Heartbeat--It's A Lovebeat" by The DeFranco Family as well as a cover by The Replacements, rap supergroup The Hot Boys featuring a teenaged Lil' Wayne with their intimidating "I Feel" as well as an unlikely but effective cover by Cat Power, and two versions of the standard "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face": by Marlene Dietrich and Marvin Gaye. At this early point in his career, Marvin was still trying to become the black Sinatra. Fortunately for us, he just became Marvin.
Other stuff: the rocking "Destroyer" by The Kinks, Bob Dylan & The Band's Basement Tape ditty "Odds And Ends", an alternate take of MerleHaggard's regretful "I Threw Away The Rose", Lee Hazelwood's odd "Them Girls", a cover of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' "I Second That Emotion" by reggae band The Chosen Few, the golden age rap classic "True Fu-Schick" by Fu-Schnickens, a remix of Paul Simon's "Late In the Eeveing" simply called "Late.." by De DJ Spin, Janet Jackson's catchy "LOve Will Never Do (Without You)", Santogold's arid "L.E.S. Artistes" and an 80s all star remix of Nas affectionate tribute "Where Are They Now" which includes guest spots by Redhead Kingpin, The Original Spinderella, Rob Base, Father MC, Monie Love, Mike D, EST, Positive K, Das EFX, Lords Of The Underground and Dres.
Round out the mix are Jackie DeShannon's sweet cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", the tender "Dear Prudence" by The Beatles, and Duke Ellington with Johnny Hodges on the romantic "Mood To Be Wooed".
The final song is Tom Waits' "Time", which either despite or perhaps because of the cartoonish lyrics still retains a majestic beauty.
