I've always liked "answer songs" in pop music, and Pam Kellum's rare funk single "What You See You Can't Get" is a sort of answer to the more well-known single by The Dramatics, "Whatcha See Is What You Get". So of course, they are back-to-back on this mix from last year.
Other stuff: Maxayn's funky cover of The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want", Sonny Boy Williamson's infamously profane "Little Village", Lupe Fiasco's soaring "Jedi Mind Tricks", the sweet Stax single "Stop Half Loving These Women" by Jimmy Lewis, the jungle rock of "Everybody Wants Some!!" by Van Halen, The Fleetwoods with the melancholy Randy Newman composition "They Tell Me It's Summer", Karen Dalton's languid cover of Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman", The Band's alleged tribute to Karen Dalton called "Katie's Been Gone", the a cappella and nostalgic "Hope" by Nas, the Beatles-sampling What I Seen" by Talib Kweli, old-timey ditty "The Spasm" by Daddy Stovepipe & Mississippi Sarah, an alternate take of Bob Dylan's lovely "If Not For You", Johnny Darrell's countrified take of Jackson Browne's "These Days", the dark carnival sounds of "Strange Days" by The Doors, Timmy Norman & The O'Jahs covering The Hombres with "Let It All Hang Out", an exuberant cover of The Police's "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" by Toots & The Maytals, a Damn Da Man remix of "Hope" by Nas, a sweet cover of The Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" by The Bird And The Bee" and finally Paul Westerberg's wry b-side "Men Without Ties".
