04-03-08: I Give You All A Boy Could Give You

Marvin Gaye kicks off this mix from last year with a live version of "What's Happenin' Brother".  Jay-Z's "American Dreamin'" samples Marvin Gaye, later in the mix his vocals are laid over an old Ghostface Killah track, "Box In Hand", for a mash-up called "Comic Book Dreamin'".  All of these are on here.

On one throwaway line, Jay-Z says he Needs a "personal Jesus", he's in"Depeche" mode.  So was I, I suppose, as the mix ends with a great acoustic version of "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode that is every bit as good as the acoustic Johnny Cash cover that everyone seems to love.

Other stuff: Eartha Kit's seductive "C'est Si Bon", Jimmy Riley's wise Bobby Womack cover "Woman Gotta Have Love", J Dilla snippet "Yesterday", Leo Sayer's infectious "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", Darondo's smooth "True", Diana Ross & The Supremes with a spirited cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away", Kim Fowley's bizarre "the Trip", Kool Keith alias Dr. Octagon with the disturbing "I'm Destructive", Shorty Godwin's catchy "Jimbo Jambo Land", Tegan & Sara's sweet live Bruce Springsteen cover "Dancing In The Dark", Eliza Gilkyson's countrified World Party cover "Is It Like Today", Bobby Womack with his soulful "Woman's Gotta Have It", an instrumental cover of the Oasis hit "Wonderwall' by The Brad Mehldau trio, Bela Lam and His Greene County Singers with the touching "Sweet Story Of Old", Bruce Springsteen's spare bootleg "My Heart Is An Open Book", Buddy Holly's tender "Words Of Love", and the original extended mix of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" which marries the Gloria Jones cover into a cover of The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?"
