This mix is bookended by two versions of "Light My Fire", the original by The Doors and a great horn-driven take by Al Green. In between, I threw in a version by Jackie Wilson.
Other stuff: the tense "My Best Friend's Girl" by The Cars, Sonny Rollins' swinging collaboration with Thelonious Monk called "Bemsha Swing", Ol' Dirty Bastard's paranoid "Snakes", the rhythmic "Bells Of Love" by The Middle Georgia Singing Convention No. 1, the catchy "Cactus" by The Pixies, James Brown's instrumental "Blind Man Can See It (extended)", Biz Markie's Steve Miller Band-sampling "Nobody Beats The Biz", a brilliant mash-up of The Temptations and The Rolling Stones by Voicedude called "Papa Was In The Rolling Stones", Samantha Sang's breathless "Emotion" backed by The Bee Gees, Bob Dylan's Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack work "Final Theme", and a bluesy cover of The Rolling Stones' "Moonlight Mile" by Alvin Youngblood Hart.
Also, there was a bit of a Stevie Wonder theme this week. In addition to his bouncy "Tuesday Heartbreak", there is a reggae cover of "Living For The City" by Pat Rhoden and two covers of "My Cherie Amour". One of those is an instrumental by the Harry J Allstars, and the other is a sweet take by The Jackson 5, although hearing a very young Michael Jackson sing it strikes me as a little sad.
