Also here: the sly "Jenifa (Taught Me) [12" Version]" by De La Soul, Patrice Rushen's bouncy "Forget Me Nots", DJ Crooked's inspired mash up of Jay-Z & Beyonce's "Bonnie & Clyde '03" with "People Everyday" by Arrested Development, The Who's witty "Substitute", ex-Replacement Tommy Stinson's band Bash & Pop with the aptly-titled "Fast & Hard", Ol' Dirty Bastard's profane western "Raw Hide", Bobby Womack's funky "Communication", a demo version of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac, Dave Davies of The Kinks covering George Harrison's hopeful "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)", Jackson Browne's reflective "These Days", Mary Lou Williams's mellow version of "It Ain't Necessarily So", and Marlene Dietrich's woozy "Symphonie".
The remaining songs are all live performances. Bob Dylan's version of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with The Rolling Thunder Revue is simply perfect. The Rolling Stones version of "Midnight Rambler" from their 1969 US Tour is so definitive it made their famous "Hot Rocks" greatest hits in place of the studio version.
And finally, this mix is bookended with two live versions of "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. The opening version stays close to the album take, while the latter version the "Reprise" is much more urgent. And I love how the concert announcer repeats his name over and over, long after Marvin's left the stage.
