03-27-08: But If I Had Your Face I Could Make It Safe And Clean

This mix from last year is about the time I discovered the old standard "All Of Me". Went a little crazy by including versions by Mae West, Willie Nelson, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.

A couple more songs repeat here. Merle Haggard's "Because You Can't Be Mine" gets a great reading by Bettye Swan.  Also, The Cure's "Close To Me" is done by both Yo La Tengo and Pyeng Threadgill. The latter is my favorite version of this song and one of my favorite songs from last year.

Other covers on this mix include Aretha Franklin's soulful version of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On", Ernest Ranglin's instrumental reggae take of Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin", and She & Him's sweet Smokey Robinson cover "You Really Got A Hold On Me". Smokey's sily smooth "Cruisin'" appears here as well.

Same title, different song: "Discipline" by Gang Starr and Sun Ra.

Other stuff:  a live acoustic take of "It's A Shame About Ray" by Julianna Hatfield and Evan Dando,  My Bloody Valentine's layered "Sometimes", Al Jarreau's jazzy version of "My Favorite Things", Peanut Butter Wolf's outstanding remix of Wink D's "get Busy", the sly "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by The Police, and a solo acoustic take of "All Apologies' by Nirvana.
