Next is an improbable live cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" by Bob Dylan. I also have Bruce's original on here, as well as a cover of his "Atlantic City" by The Band. Bob gets his own odd tribute from The Replacements, who recorded a gag in the studio called "Like A Rolling Pin". The story goes that they were recording in a studio in the late 80s right next door to Bob. They wanted him to come hang out with them, and wrote this drunken half-cover and played it loudly, hoping it would seep through the walls and entice him to join them. Didn't work.
Other stuff: the playful "Fudge Pudge" by Organized Konfusion, Yo La Tengo's mellow Prince cover "1999", Tom Waiyts' weeper "Tell It To Me", Al Jolson's resilient "Keep Smiling At Trouble", Sadt X's western-hued "Hang 'Em High", Merle Haggard's sly "New York City Blues", and Cat Power's ghostly "empty Shell.
M. Ward is here with a pretty instrumental cover of "You Still Believe In Me" by The Beach Boys. I wish he had a vocal on it. Finally, two versions of the standard "Stars Fell On Alabama". One is by Jack Teagarden's Chicagoan, the other, which closes this mix is by Billie Holiday.
