This mix from five years ago starts with a series of brooding songs: "Concerto De Aranjuez (Adagio) (part 2, alt take)" from Miles Davis' Gil Evans collaboration on the Sketches Of Spain album, the haunting "A Day In the Life" by The Beatles, covers of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It, Black" by Opium Jukebox and Eric Burdon & The Animals, followed by The Verve's aptly titled "Bittersweet Symphony".
Why the bummed out mood? Piecing it together as I throw up all these old mixes, the date of this one seems to be right around the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election. Which might explain those opening songs and even on-the-nose titles like the witty "We Got Back The Plague" by The Fiery Furnaces.
Other stuff: the cool "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" by The Marvelettes, Larry Weiss' whimsical theme to the television show Who's The Boss called "Brand New Life", Antoinette's aggressive "Who's The Boss", David & David's wry "Welcome To The Boomtown", Nice & Smooth's Tracy Chapman-sampling "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow", an acoustic version of John Lennon's tender "Look At Me", a cover of Outkast's "Ms. Jackson" by The Vines, the dense "Unhappy" by Outkast, a mash up of Beck and Pharrell by DJ Reset called "Frontin' On Debra", Busy Bee's funky "Suicide", the swaggering "Another Girl, Another Planet" by The Only Ones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' sexy "Black Tongue", the wistful "How We Were Before" by The Zombies and an acoustic version of the philosophic "God" by John Lennon.
