Late August is a good time to enjoy summer music, so this mix from four years ago is full of it. The Gershwin standard "Summertime" is tackled by artsist as diverse as Charles Mingus, Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company, John Coltrane, The Twilight Singers, Santo & Johnny and Sonny Rollins. I've also included two versions by Duke Ellington: one a full band performance and the other a more simple piano arrangement.
The other song featured more than once is "Stephanie Says" by the Velvet Underground, here in covers by Emiliana Torrini and Bettie Serveert.
Other stuff: a live version of "Sympathy For The Devil" by The Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour, Laura Nyro and LaBelle with a live cover of "The Bells" by The Originals, a live version of "Fourth Time Around" by Bob Dylan from 1966, an instrumental version of "Boom Music" by Quasimoto, Dr. Dre's languid "Xxplosive" with Nate Dogg, Lambchop's cover of "Backstreet Girl" by The Rolling Stones, Laura Nyro's sweet "Wedding Bell Blues", an instrumental of Cam'ron's "Hey Ma", and the soulful "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates.
