It was always curious to me that most of The Who songs were sung by Roger Daltrey but written by Pete Townshend. Townshend's solo career is a chance to hear his lyrics sung by the man who wrote them.
On this mix from a few years ago I have three of his solo tracks: "Hiding Out" from his White City album, and two practice takes of later Who songs. The first is a stripped down version of "Eminence Front" and the other, "Teresa", allegedly written for the actress Theresa Russell, later turned into "Athena".
For reasons I can't remember I included lots of songs on this mix with "Hello" in the title: Todd Rundgren's sweet "Hello It's Me", the goofy "Hello Again" by The Cars, the chipper "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles and Willie Nelson's lonely "Hello Walls".
The only repeating song is the maritime standard "Sloop John B.", by The Dicey Doh Singers as well as The Beach Boys.
Other stuff: Jurassic 5's Marvin Gaye-sampling "End Up Like This", a live acoustic version of "Rich Girl" by Hall & Oates, Kool Moe Dee's gross-out "Go See The Doctor", the snotty "Stupid Girl" by The Rolling Stones, Run-D.M.C.'s mean "Dumb Girl", the blissful "Naturally Stoned" by Avant Garde, Method Man's confident "Say" featuring Lauryn Hill, Marvin Gaye's wistful "Just To Keep You Satisfied", Neil Young's bitter "Stupid Girl", the wry "Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam" by The Vaselines, the gorgeous "After The Rain" by The John Coltrane Quartet and a cover of The Beatles' "Michelle" by The Four Tops.
